Gamified learning is a trend that has become increasingly important in recent years. The learning content is combined with elements of play to increase motivation and thus also learning success. This approach can benefit both individuals and businesses. In this blog, we take a closer look at the advantages and explain how you can improve learning success with gamified learning.

1. What is gamified learning?

For some time now, many companies have been training their employees with the help of e-learning. Successful internalization of the topics requires constant repetition and learner motivation. Gamified e-learning aims to meet these requirements. The combination of learning content with elements of play is designed to increase learning motivation and improve learning performance.

Gamified learning is a relatively new approach to learning. It is a method in which elements of play are integrated into the learning process. Generally, this method is used in an educational context, but it is also used to train employees in companies.

Gamified learning can take different forms, such as a simple quiz, an interactive game, or a complex, digital learning program. For example, a participant is given a task. Through the use of game mechanics, he or she is motivated to master this task.

Gamified learning provides participants with a meaningful experience that they can transfer to the real world.

2. How can gamified learning improve learning success?

The game-typical elements such as collecting points, competing against each other, progress bars, ranking, earning badges or playing for speed ensure an increase in the motivation and commitment of the learners to the topic to be learned. This creates a positive learning experience, which in turn increases the learning effect.

The game scenarios are typically realistic and taken from everyday work. This also helps to transfer what has been learned to everyday work and to apply it in everyday situations.

Topsim, a provider of gamified in-house learning solutions, puts it this way: "Confronting a challenging task in a competitive environment arouses human curiosity, increases the motivation and commitment of the learners, and thus ensures greater well-being and efficiency in further education."

3. What are the benefits of gamified learning?

The idea of gamified e-learning is to package the learning content in a way that makes it more attractive and interesting for learners. At the same time, the elements of play are intended to motivate learners to internalize the learning content more quickly and effectively. The combination of learning content with elements of play aims to increase learning motivation and improve learning performance.

Berlitz.com writes about gamification: "Up to 90% of the knowledge to be imparted remains in the learner's memory."

In addition to the advantages of location- and time-independent learning, which traditional e-learning also offers, the elements of play also encourage increased motivation.

4. How can you use gamified learning in your company?

That's easy. Instead of, or in addition to classic e-learning, you can offer gamified e-learning. Use it, for example, to refresh or dive deeper into topics and offer it as a follow-up to a classic training course. However, rather than immediately following a training course with gamified e-learning, it is advantageous to offer it a few months later to see which knowledge has been retained.

For example, our gamified e-learnings can be delivered 6 to 12 months after a topic refresher campaign.

5. Why should you conduct security training with gamified learning methods?

Cyber criminals don't just sit and wait. They are always looking for new ways to get money. In order to protect the data and information of a company and individuals, technical measures such as firewalls and the use of technically sophisticated password systems are essential.

Hackers too have noticed that they can no longer easily attack companies in this way. So, they are increasingly targeting employees since the chances of success are much greater there.

This is why it is so important to train your employees well on information security and cyber risk issues.

However, compliance or information security topics can come across as dry, unappealing, and unmotivating. This can be counteracted If the e-learning and training courses contain playful elements. This makes the topics more exciting and makes learning fun.

All of our e-learning courses contain such elements of play. Even the «classic» ones, includes interactive scenarios and exercises, plus a knowledge test, which all provide variety from plain theory.

With our gamified e-learnings, the focus is less on theory and more on playful elements such as speed, collecting points, and competing against each other. While requiring basic knowledge of a topic, the courses are therefore more entertaining. You can compete within a team or as a team against other teams and see who scores more points.

There is a good chance that the employees will talk about the challenge during the breaks and thus repeat and internalize further what they have learned.
